Wind Quartet with a Difference

When I began creating vibrant digital print versions from my photographs the first project that I had printed was of the four Greek Wind Gods.

Known as the Anemoi, the gods associated with the four cardinal compass points are Boreas (North Wind), Notus (South Wind), Eurus (East Wind) and Zephyrus (West Wind). Each has very distinct traits which I tried to incorporate into their portraits.

Of course, my photographs were not of wind gods but of Ancient Greek statues that, after some processing, took on new personas.

Boreas is a winter wind, bringer of storms and icy blasts. The black background conjures a bleak winter night, he is surrounded by falling sleet and his icy countenance is marked and pitted. Boreas was created from a photograph of the Antikythera Youth statue.

By contrast, Notus is a summer wind but still capable of destruction bringing late summer storms. He is hot and desiccating. This is represented by his fiery eyes and parched, papery skin. The blue sky is laden with moisture. Notus began life as a photograph of the statue known as Diadoumenos.

Eurus is an autumnal wind, changeable and some think unlucky. His background uses the colours of Autumn and his profile is blurry on the lefthand side to suggest his changeability. This was created from a different view of the Antikythera Youth.

Zephyrus is the gentlest of winds and a messenger of Spring. He brings spring showers and is fructifying. The original photograph for this image was of a statue of Antinous, a handsome youth and favourite of the Emperor Hadrian.

I had these prints professionally framed so that they could be hung straight on your wall or make a unique and stylish gift, which I hope is demonstrated in the roomset above.
