Mandarin Dragon Mixed Media

This Mandarin Dragon mixed media artwork combines a variety of upcycled materials with the wonder of Ancient Chinese mythology. It was inspired by the design on a biscuit tin; the first time I have cut tin for use in one of my box frames. For me, the design coiling around the tin immediately said ‘dragon’ and I began creating a setting for it.

The Chinese dragon is a magical creature with appropriate powers. It is sitting on terracotta coloured fabric and surrounded by holographic clouds, a radiant sun and crystal topped golden discs. Below are temples cut from a hand-embroidered tablecloth and an insect companion, a cicada. The cicada was also held in high esteem in Chinese lore as a symbol of purity and virtue. It also represents renewal and rebirth in a way similar to how the Ancient Egyptians viewed the Scarab Beetle – the subject of another of my box frames for which you might like to read this blog post.

The black box frame is 37 cm square, 6 cm deep and can be hung on the wall or displayed on a shelf.
