Blue Man Storm Kelpie

The Blue Man Storm Kelpie is a creature from Scottish mythology and this piece vividly captures its mysterious and ominous nature. Also known as the Blue Men of the Minch, they were said to inhabit a stretch of water that separates the Scottish mainland from the Outer Hebrides (the isles of Lewis and Harris). The Blue Men could raise storms and were always on the lookout for stricken ships. In calmer weather they would sleep or float just below the sea’s surface.

The Storm Kelpie has the body of a man but can twist and dive like a porpoise. It swims with its torso out of the water. I’ve given this Blue Man a merman’s tail. I have used a range of beads and other jewellery pieces, old tie fabrics, shells, pebbles and the ship is a player token from a Monopoly board game. Together they create a vibrant picture of activity above and below the waves.

The black box frame is 27 cm square and can be displayed on a shelf or hung on the wall. It would make an ideal gift for anyone interested in Scottish folklore or mythology and the fantasy realm generally. This frame would also be excellent paired with my other Kelpie artwork.
