Ancient Wonders Scarab Beetle

This Ancient Wonders Scarab Beetle also has a dragonfly companion amid the desert sands. The sacred scarab (kheper) was seen by the Ancient Egyptians to represent the whole cycle of life: birth, life, death and resurrection. Because the scarab is also less flatteringly known as a dung beetle, the Egyptians equated his rolling of a ball of dung with the god of the morning sun Khepri who, rising with the dawn, began his eternal journey rolling the sun across the sky, being reborn each day.

I have used the colours of gold, turquoise and lapis lazuli to emulate the precious materials well known in the ancient world. The beads, jewellery pieces and mosaic stone tesserae used in this frame are predominantly reused and upcycled. The embossed metal plate of the sphinx and pyramid was a bookmark. Sandpaper was used to create the desert dunes. Together they help echo the grandeur and symbolism of Ancient Egypt, a timeless story retold in shimmering gold.
