In the mists of time …

Japan’s legendary first emperor, Jimmu was said to have called the country ‘Akitsushima’ or Dragonfly Island after climbing a mountain and seeing the island’s shape. This story, along with the unusual rectangular beads seen above, are what inspired my latest beaded dragonfly art. I built a gateway and have titled the frame, The Dragon Gate. In ancient times the dragonfly symbolised courage and strength and was associated with Japanese warriors.

The Autumn Darter

The Autumn Darter dragonfly is also celebrated in Japan. So much so that they have a popular children’s song about it called ‘Akatombo’ or Red Dragonfly.

I have incorporated my version of Akatombo within this mixed media frame made with a variety of red beads. It is hovering above a lily pond edged with acer branches and pink flowers. There are Koi carp swimming in the pond.

A plume moth is also flying above the pond. I was intrigued to discover these insects which have wings that can resemble feathers or twigs and are unlike the moths we might usually think of.  A golden sun and some gauze clouds complete the scene.

I had wondered how I might be able to use these rectangular beads for quite a while and was thrilled when these Japanese stories provided the answer. I hope that my artwork brings a flavour of the Far East to you. You can see The Dragon Gate in my shop.
