Great Gifts for Great Dads

collage of six unique mixed media artworks for Father's Day gifts.

Far more interesting than socks!

For this Father’s Day, have you thought about getting him a handmade artwork?

Maybe you haven’t considered something like my mixed media shadow box assemblages – unique artworks that are distinctly different.

The selection in the collage above includes subjects like Scottish Folklore, Ancient Egyptian mythology, Sci-fi and nature; all of them works of imagination. I also work with mainly upcycled materials, which keeps them out of landfill.

mixed media box frame art of a mandarin dragon cut from tin on a terracotta colour fabric sky with a bead cicada and a golden sun with golden disks and crystal beads.
mixed media artwork based on the legend of King Arthur, with a crystal cave, sword in the stone, dragon standard, goddess statue, tree, moon and clouds.

Unique and handmade

Every one of my mixed media artworks is unique. None of them can be repeated because I work with mainly upcycled materials. That makes each one very special.

The subject matter might be suggested by the materials themselves, something I’ve read or simply an idea that pops into my head. For example, the Mandarin Dragon above was cut out from a biscuit tin because the design on the tin immediately said ‘dragon’ to me. I then created the other elements with Ancient Chinese mythology in mind. I included a cicada insect because, like dragons, they were held in high regard.

Myth and Magic Arthurian Legend is the other artwork. This was an idea inspired by Mary Stewart’s book, The Crystal Cave, part of a trilogy about Merlin. I built the piece around the cave and included King Arthur’s sword, Excalibur and a dragon standard, playing on Arthur’s family name of Pendragon. There’s a representation of the pagan deity, the Great Goddess and on this frame I included a pair of mourning moths, lamenting the loss of one of Ancient Britain’s great heroes.

I put a lot of thought and care into each of my artworks, selecting just the right materials, and I hope that they will provide endless interest and give lots of pleasure.

So give Dad something very special for his special day. I can guarantee that no-one else will be giving him such a unique gift.

You’ll find these frames and many others in my shop

I think these unique creations would make excellent gifts for Father’s Day…. the detail that has gone into them and the stories of mythology or history that they tell is so interesting !
