It is Saturday 13 April 2023 and this morning I searched through my photo archive to find something to post on my Instagram page. This image was one that came up under 13 April 2018.

I remember creating it using a neon effect and the tangle of vibrant lines immediately made me think of a life force coursing through a form; a form that would become a man, created from the darkness. I added the words ‘and God created’. Looking at it again this morning it took me on an unexpected philosophical journey.

However each of us may see God as an entity, I know there are many who find the idea of an omnipotent being  responsible for creation as too fantastical. Then I thought of the Earth’s history, our solar system and the universe and wondered if that is not equally incredible?

Estimates suggest that the universe was created around fourteen billion years ago. I think that my ‘Nucleus’ image (above) is a suitable illustration for the Big Bang theory.

In turn, our solar system is thought to have formed about 4.6 billion years ago. Numbers such as these seem difficult to comprehend. But then, what if we think about the Earth?

Another of my photographs, this time of a glass bowl, is my idea, after a little processing, of the formation of a planet.

Earth’s history suggests that dinosaurs first appeared around 230 million years ago and died out after about 165 million years.

We, Homo sapiens, came along around 300,000 years ago – the blink of an eye in relative terms. Which takes me back to my original image at the top of the page and this rather thought provoking journey! Do let me know what you think by leaving a comment.
